F1 Racing Round-Up

F1 Racing Round-Up: Healthy Dose

of Victory, Humility and Hope

With the month in rearview, let’s revisit Ferrari’s glorious performance at the Australian GP, as well as the missteps at Emilia Romagna GP.

Earlier this month, Charles demonstrated true dominance over Verstappen to the tune of 34 points. Leclerc took P1 in what really can only be described as a landslide, as he was not dueling his usual competition for this victory. He was able to skillfully distance himself and drive it on home.

Now, the road to success is paved with struggles, and rarely is there a “perfect” sport season overflowing with wins and void of losses. In fact, the L’s allow perspective, and gift an opportunity to reassess and readjust. Imola provided precisely that. Scuderia Ferrari returned to home soil for the European debut this season. Several mistakes were made by Sainz early on. The spin, and the damage that ensued left him behind, and it ultimately resulted in a collision that removed him from Sunday’s GP. Leclerc had a strong showing on Saturday, but Red Bull still had the edge.

With 15 laps remaining, and Charles in third, he was pitted and given fresh tires. The strategy and hopeful outcome was to provoke Red Bull to stop as well – thereby generating a race reset. As Charles approached Sergio, it was looking up for Ferrari before the mistake that dropped him to ninth, before he ultimately rallied and finished sixth.

Charles acknowledges that the spin simply should not have occurred, and he echoed the disappointment of Tifosi everywhere. “I was too greedy and I paid the price for it,” he said. Now, Ferrari’s aggressive approach has received some criticism, but no apologies have been issued from Binotto. In fact, he maintains that it was the right call – no regrets asking the driver to push for more. One may take a great risk, and there is not always a great return – and mistakes can be costly. But this does not mean risks should not be taken. There is an important lesson in all of this, a lesson for us that transcends the track.

In the grand scheme of the season, the risk-taking approach may very well serve us, and it may well be what separates us from the rest. Only time will tell us. For those not well versed in the sport of F1, consider this. Just as Tiger Woods is paramount in the sport of golf, Ferrari performing well in F1 is a victory for everyone.
